*****I read the original story in paperback and loved it. When the book came out electronically and said it was revised, I was curious to see how it could be any better -- but it was! The additions/revisions are subtle, but make the story even more authentic. This was a great read the first time, and an even better one the second time! Highly recommended as an out-of-the-ordinary romance/mystery story

Only in the Movies
by Jean Ann Geist

I was a young mother during the free-loving, sexually-uninhibited '70's, and romance novels became my outlet for escape from the grueling grind of work and parenting. As I have aged, my reading preferences have evolved more into mysteries, although I still enjoy a good romance.

Jean Ann Geist has written a romantic mystery that will satisfy both the mystery buffs as well as the romantic reader. Only in the Movies introduces Cassie Alexander, a 50-year-old heroine whose husband leaves her for a younger woman. Her situation is not that typical, however.

Although her ex-husband, Paul Alexander, was CEO of O'Shay's, the small Ohio town blamed Cassie for the jobs lost when the bankrupt O'Shay's Catsup Factory shut down. It was believed that Cassie, in her role as accountant at O'Shays', had embezzled $1.5 million from the company, resulting in its bankruptcy.

Romance enters the picture when Jaime Alvarez returns for the Tecumseh High Alumni Banquet and Dance. Jaime and Cassie had been in love when Jaime left for college. But fate and circumstance had separated them for three decades so Jaime was returning to get closure. He hoped to find that Cassie was no longer the girl he had loved, and that he would find her to be matronly, uninteresting and unattractive.

It was not to be since Cassie was just as beautiful and exciting as he remembered her to be.

Ms. Geist has woven an intricate story with surprises at the turn of every page. Although there is inadequate clue development in the embezzlement case, the personal life of Cassie proves to be the greater mystery to be solved.

Family dynamics and secrets, accidental deaths that may not have been accidental, small town corruption and diabolical evil are the ingredients that Geist mixes in to concoct her plot.

The ending may be a bit improbable regarding the resolution of the criminal charges, but the relationship between Cassie and Jaime is complex and satisfying in both the romantic and the sexual context. I admit to shedding a few tears of both angst and joy as the emotions played out.

The whimsical cover illustration for Only in the Movies is the accomplishment of Ms. Geist's daughter, Sascha Instone, of Ridgeway.
